Run. Dog. Cat. Cat. Me.

Everything you need to know about running and life and any other random crap I find bouncing through my mind like a ping pong ball. And always be sure your shoes are happy.

Here’s a serious post for you two.  Have you ever heard of Sarcopenia?  The first I ever heard of it was at the RRCA National Convention in March, when Ashley Hofeditz, RD, LDN,  a Dietician and Nutritionist, spoke about the topic.  It was literally eye-opening:  I stared at her wide-eyed, madly scribbling notes on my name tag, which I promptly lost.

To learn more about it, and to see the full article about the photos below, please visit Mr. Tim Huntley’s entire blog and my previous post featuring the article by Ms. Hofeditz in the Memphis Commercial Appeal.

To get your attention, I’m pasting a couple pics Mr. Huntley posted.

  1. And yet, all we ever hear about is how running will destroy our knees. BTW, two of my mom’s friends recently had knee replacements. They were not runners; they were obese. I think there’s a lot of misinformation out there.

    • Absolutely! And of course my parents never had access to any info like this, and I didn’t know anything about it, but the Docs knew my dad would never get better and never told us, never explained anything, and my mom kept saying, “they just need to do more PT with him!” He’d been on a trache and feeding tube, flat on his back, for three solid months before they sent him to long term care. He was never going to be able to use those muscles and PT was not going to help, and it was inevitable he’d die from pneumonia. So we just kept holding onto him, instead of knowing to let go. It makes me so mad. You do not want to know what I think of world famous neurosurgeons.
On a happy note, Ashley Hofeditz SENT ME A FB FRIEND REQUEST. It’s like if JK Rowling sent me one. She’s probably starting to question what she just did… 😉

  2. Yeah okay so suddenly all these months of rehabbing that Runner’s Knee instead of accepting the “advice” of people who said “Maybe this is your SIGN that you’re too old to do this” and quitting are TOTALLY worth it! As is every morning of waking up with slightly sore thigh muscles…

  3. I missed my run today, and now I feel like a sarcopenic. 🙂 Does the hardcore gardening count? I don’t think so. Exercise is just not the same without a good run, even if I’m covered with juniper scratches and compost. Those are impressive pictures, but they look curiously steaklike and are grossing me out…

    • I know – I keep comparing them to a huge ham steak! Gardening is supposed to be good exercise, and it uses different muscles which is great. Plus it makes your brain go all zen.
